Where East meets West, in history and in landscape

Türkiye, from the minarets of the Bosphorus to the green lakes of the north

A country across two continents, where thousands of years of Ottoman and Byzantine history meet turquoise coasts and green mountains.

The destination

About Türkiye

Türkiye is one of the most varied destinations in the world. It links Asia and Europe, and brings together thousands of years of Ottoman and Byzantine history with landscapes that run from turquoise coves to green mountains and strange rock formations. It is also a largely Muslim country: halal food and mosques are found in every city, and the call to prayer carries over the old quarters and the mountain villages alike.

In Istanbul, three World Heritage monuments stand side by side on the historic peninsula: the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque, the Blue Mosque and Topkapı Palace, which keeps the Sacred Relics. An hour away by air, Cappadocia sends its balloons up at dawn over the fairy chimneys of Göreme National Park. In the south, Antalya opens onto the Mediterranean and its resorts, while Bursa, the first Ottoman capital, keeps its early mosques and Mount Uludağ, reached by cable car from the city.

The north, on the Black Sea, is the choice for green valleys and a mild summer: the city of Trabzon, Uzungöl lake among the forests, the Ayder plateau in the mountains of Rize, and Sumela Monastery set into a cliff. In summer it is served by direct flights from the Kingdom.

At ZHO we arrange the whole journey: hotels suited to your family, a private car with driver, tours with Arabic-speaking guides and the domestic connections between cities. Tell us your dates and the number of travellers, and we will come back to you with a detailed programme.

Questions

Before you go

Do I need a visa for Türkiye?
Saudi citizens with an ordinary passport need no visa for a tourist stay of up to 90 days in any 180. For residents of the Kingdom the rules depend on nationality; our team checks them for you and helps with the application if one is needed.
When is the best time to visit?
Spring (April to June) and autumn (September and October) are best for Istanbul and Cappadocia. Summer (June to September) is the season for the Black Sea north and Antalya. Winter suits the snow on Uludağ, and Istanbul stays lovely, if rainy.
Is halal food easy to find?
Yes. Türkiye is largely Muslim and restaurant meat is generally halal. Some restaurants in tourist areas serve alcohol, so we recommend family restaurants and book them for you.
Is it easy to pray while travelling?
There is a mosque in almost every neighbourhood and village, and the call to prayer is heard at each time. Airports, shopping centres and roadside stops have prayer rooms, and your private driver will know the nearest mosque at every stop.
How do I travel between cities?
Istanbul, Cappadocia, Antalya and Trabzon are linked by domestic flights of about an hour to an hour and a half. Within cities and across the north we arrange a private car and driver, usually Arabic-speaking in the Black Sea region.
What currency is used, and are cards accepted?
The currency is the Turkish lira. Cards are accepted in hotels, restaurants and malls, but carry some lira in cash for markets and villages. Exchange offices are common in the big cities.
Is Türkiye safe for families, and what should we wear?
Cities and tourist areas are generally safe; just watch your belongings in crowded markets. Mosques require modest dress covering shoulders and knees, and a headscarf for women, usually provided at the entrance.
