Warsaw is Poland's modern capital, joining contemporary towers with a historic Old Town. Most of the city was destroyed in the Second World War, and its Old Town was then entirely rebuilt from old paintings and records, joining the UNESCO list in 1980 as a rare example of reconstruction.
From the Royal Castle on Castle Square, the Royal Route runs south along Krakowskie Przedmieście and Nowy Świat to the Royal Łazienki Park with its Palace on the Isle, and on to the Baroque Wilanów Palace. In the park stands the Chopin monument, where free concerts are held on summer Sundays.
Chopin airport is close to the centre, with direct flights from Riyadh, so Warsaw makes a good start to a journey. High-speed trains reach Kraków in about two and a quarter hours.
