Discover Tangier
Tangier is a port city on the Strait of Gibraltar, looking across to the Spanish coast on clear days, and over its history has gathered Andalusian, European and Arab influences. Its medina and kasbah climb the hill above the port, with views over the strait.
About 14 km west of the city, Cap Spartel and its lighthouse mark where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, and nearby the Caves of Hercules open onto the ocean through a gap shaped like the map of Africa. Wide beaches and fish restaurants line the coast.
The Al Boraq high-speed train links Tangier with Casablanca in about two hours ten; Chefchaouen is about two hours away and walled, white Asilah under an hour. Tangier suits two nights on a journey that joins the north with the imperial cities.
