Zurich is the country's financial and cultural capital, known for Bahnhofstrasse and its luxury shopping, and for an old town on the banks of the river and the lake. The street runs from the main station to Lake Zurich.
The Grossmünster and Fraumünster churches stand on either bank of the Limmat, with the old lanes of the Niederdorf between them. From the hotels on the Zürichberg hills you see the lake with the Alps on the horizon.
Zurich is a natural first or last stop, with its airport about 15 minutes away by train. The Rhine Falls make a half-day trip, and Lucerne is 45 minutes away.
