The destination

About South Africa

South Africa is one of the most varied destinations in the world, combining exceptional wildlife, striking mountain ranges, long beaches on both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, and modern cities. A trip here mixes adventure, luxury and a rich cultural history.

In the south-west lies Cape Town, the legislative capital and the country's most beautiful city, with Table Mountain, the Cape of Good Hope and the penguins of Boulders Beach. In the north-east, Kruger National Park is one of Africa's largest reserves and the best known for seeing the Big Five. Between them is Johannesburg, the economic capital, with the Apartheid Museum and Soweto.

Along the south coast the Garden Route runs between mountains and ocean, with green forests, lagoons and small towns, and on the Indian Ocean Durban has warm weather, beaches and a blend of Indian and African culture.

Muslims have been part of South African life for more than three centuries, above all in Cape Town and Durban, which have historic mosques and restaurants certified halal by local Muslim bodies. Saudi citizens enter without a visa for up to 90 days.

Questions

Before you go

Do I need a visa for South Africa?
No. Saudi citizens on ordinary passports enter visa-free for up to 90 days. The passport must have enough validity and at least two blank pages. Residents' requirements depend on nationality.
When is the best time to visit?
The seasons are the reverse of the Gulf's. Cape Town and the Garden Route are at their best from November to March, safari in Kruger from May to September, and Durban is warm all year. September and October, the southern spring, suit a combined trip.
Is halal food available?
Yes. Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg have many restaurants and shops certified by local Muslim bodies such as the Muslim Judicial Council Halaal Trust and SANHA. In safari lodges we request halal meals in advance.
Is it easy to pray?
Yes in the cities: Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg have many mosques. In safari lodges you pray in your suite, and we give you the qibla direction and prayer times.
Is South Africa safe?
Tourist areas, hotels and lodges are generally safe, but crime in cities is high. We arrange private cars with drivers for every transfer, and advise not walking at night or showing jewellery and phones in public places.
How do we travel between regions?
By domestic flights: Johannesburg to Cape Town is about two hours, to Kruger about an hour to an hour and a half, to Durban about an hour. The Garden Route is driven from Cape Town.
Do we need malaria prevention?
Cape Town and the Garden Route are malaria-free; the Kruger area carries a risk, especially in the rainy season. Consult your doctor well before travel.
What currency is used?
The South African rand; cards are accepted almost everywhere. Carry a little cash for tips, which are customary for rangers and drivers.
