Germany, from the Brandenburg Gate to the castles of Bavaria

In Germany the train arrives on time, and after every station a forest, a castle or a lake is waiting.

The destination

About Germany

Germany brings together a rich cultural history, striking architecture and a landscape that ranges from dense forest to clear lakes and the high Alps. It suits travellers who want castles, modern cities and a refined European way of life in one holiday.

In the north-east, Berlin has the Brandenburg Gate, Museum Island and what remains of its Wall. In the south, Munich leads into Bavaria: Neuschwanstein Castle, and the Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak, above Garmisch-Partenkirchen. In the south-west the Black Forest spreads around Baden-Baden, while Frankfurt is the main air gateway and the starting point for the Rhine Valley.

Summer, June to September, suits families best, with long days and mild weather in the mountains and forests; autumn is beautiful in colour, and winter brings snow to the Alps. The large cities have big Muslim communities, so halal restaurants and mosques are easy to find.

At ZHO we arrange the Schengen visa file, the hotels, high-speed train tickets, private drivers and a programme that leaves time for prayer and for the children to rest.

Questions

Before you go

Do I need a visa for Germany?
Yes: a Schengen visa through TLScontact in Riyadh, Jeddah or Al Khobar, in person for fingerprints, decided by the German Embassy in Riyadh. Since 2024 Saudi citizens may receive a 5-year multiple-entry visa on a first application if they meet the conditions, though approval is never guaranteed. Our team prepares your file and books the appointment.
When is the best time to visit Germany?
June to September for families, the Alps and the Black Forest; September to October for autumn colour; December to March for snow and skiing in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Is halal food easy to find in Germany?
Yes, in Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich and Stuttgart, thanks to large Turkish and Arab communities. Choice is smaller in mountain villages and the Black Forest, so we ask your hotel for halal meals in advance and suggest fish and vegetarian dishes.
Where can I pray in Germany?
The large cities have many mosques, among them the Şehitlik Mosque in Berlin. Many hotels provide the qibla direction and a prayer mat on request, and Frankfurt and Munich airports have prayer rooms.
How do I travel between German cities?
The high-speed ICE trains are fast and comfortable between the large cities, and we book first class. For the mountains and the Black Forest a car with a private driver is best: distances are short and the roads beautiful.
Is Germany safe for families?
Germany is among the safest destinations in Europe. Just watch for pickpockets at stations and in crowds, and leave your passport in the hotel safe with a copy on you.
Do I need cash, or are cards enough?
The euro. Cards are accepted in hotels and large shops, but some cafés and small village shops still prefer cash, so carry a little. Visitors from outside the European Union can claim back VAT on eligible purchases.
Are there dress rules in Germany?
Germany has no general ban on the headscarf or face veil in public places, but traffic law requires a driver's face to remain recognisable at the wheel. Modest dress is preferred in churches and religious sites.
