Discover Tromsø
Tromsø sits on a small island about 350 km inside the Arctic Circle and is called the capital of the Arctic. It is a lively university city, a short flight from Oslo, ringed by mountains and fjords that make it an ideal base for winter adventures.
Its position beneath the auroral oval makes Tromsø one of the world's best cities for the northern lights, which can appear from late August to early April whenever the sky is clear and dark. We arrange evening chases with specialist guides who drive towards clear skies, with thermal clothing and hot drinks on board.
By day the Fjellheisen cable car takes you up to the Storsteinen platform, 421 metres above the city, and the triangular Arctic Cathedral faces you across the strait. You can also try dog sledding or nearby fjord trips, and in summer the sun stays above the horizon all night.
