Raa Atoll

Raa Atoll lies in the north of the Maldives, about 45 minutes by seaplane from Malé. Its distance from the capital gives it calm and unspoilt nature, with few resorts spread across private islands.

It is home to Vaadhoo island, famous for its "sea of stars", when the water along the beach glows blue at night thanks to bioluminescent plankton that light up as the water moves. It is a natural event that cannot be guaranteed, and shows best on dark, moonless nights.

Raa's waters hold reef fish and spinner dolphins, often seen on sunset cruises, and there are dive sites in its channels and around its islands.

Its resorts suit those who want privacy and distance from crowds, including resorts with family pool villas.
