Discover Lake Como
Lake Como runs between the Pre-Alps in the shape of an upturned Y, its shores lined with villages and villas with gardens. The town of Como sits at its southern tip, about an hour by car from Milan.
Bellagio stands where the lake's three arms meet, with Varenna and its coloured houses across the water. The best-known villas include Villa del Balbianello at Lenno and Villa Carlotta at Tremezzo, whose gardens flower in spring. Ferries link the towns, but a private boat gives you freedom and privacy.
The best months are April to October. The lake is calm and suits couples and families looking for rest after the cities. Como also makes a good first stop on a road trip to Verona and Lake Garda.
