Discover Inverness
Inverness is the largest town and capital of the Highlands, on the River Ness where it meets the Moray Firth, minutes from the northern end of Loch Ness. Its airport has flights from London and European cities, making it an easy gateway to the north.
Its red sandstone castle overlooks the river, and in 2026 the Inverness Castle Experience opened there after major restoration, telling the story of the Highlands and their people. The small Ness Islands, with footbridges and paths among the trees, lie upriver, and the covered Victorian Market sits in the centre.
About 20 minutes away are the Culloden battlefield (1746) and its visitor centre, and the ancient Clava Cairns. Inverness is the starting point for Loch Ness, the north coast and the Cairngorms.
