Discover Oslo
Oslo is Norway's capital and usual gateway, a calm city at the head of the Oslofjord, ringed by wooded hills. Its waterfront has been rebuilt over the past two decades, so you can walk from the historic Akershus Fortress to the Opera House and on to the MUNCH museum without leaving the water.
The Opera House, opened in 2008, has a sloping marble roof that visitors climb on foot for views over the harbour and islands. A few steps away, the new MUNCH museum holds the largest collection of Edvard Munch's work. On the Bygdøy peninsula are the ship and polar museums, such as the Fram Museum. The famous Viking Ship Museum is closed while it is rebuilt as the Museum of the Viking Age; we will tell you its opening date when we plan.
Oslo is easy to get around by tram and ferry, and the Grønland district has many halal restaurants and several mosques. It is also where the classic train journey west to Bergen and the fjords begins.
