Discover South Malé Atoll
South Malé Atoll lies south of the capital, separated from the northern atoll by the Vaadhoo channel. Like its neighbour it is close to the airport, reached by speedboat in 20 to 60 minutes, which makes it practical for families with small children and for short stays.
It is known for wide, shallow turquoise lagoons, made for swimming, paddling and water sports, and for channels that draw turtles, reef fish and dolphins. Small inhabited islands such as Guraidhoo and Maafushi show everyday Maldivian life.
Family resorts with kids' clubs and two-bedroom villas sit beside quiet resorts for honeymooners, and some share neighbouring islands, which widens the choice of restaurants.
The best season is December to April; the rest of the year is still good, with passing showers.
