Discover Nizwa
Nizwa is one of Oman's oldest cities and was its capital in several eras. It lies at the foot of Jebel Akhdar, about an hour and a half from Muscat, and was named Capital of Islamic Culture in 2015.
Its landmark is the 17th-century Nizwa Fort with its massive round tower, beside the Nizwa mosque and the souk, which sells Omani halwa, dates, silver and pottery.
On Friday mornings the traditional livestock market brings Omani life vividly into view. Nearby are Bahla Fort, on the World Heritage list since 1987, and Jabreen Castle with its painted ceilings.
Nizwa is usually visited on the day you drive up to Jebel Akhdar, as it is on the way.
