Discover Baa Atoll
UNESCO added Baa Atoll to its network of Biosphere Reserves in 2011 for its varied coral reefs and rich marine life. It lies about 35 minutes by seaplane north-west of Malé.
Its best-known site is Hanifaru Bay, a small bay where manta rays, and sometimes whale sharks, gather to feed on plankton during the south-west monsoon, from May to November, peaking between July and October. The bay is protected: snorkelling only, no scuba diving, and visits are limited in number.
The atoll has some of the finest resorts in the Maldives, built around conservation, some with large family villas in the forest, observatories and marine biologists on staff.
We time your stay for the manta season if that is your aim, and book the Hanifaru trip with the resort in advance.
