Discover Hallstatt
Hallstatt is the legendary village that looks like a painting on the lakeshore, one of the most photographed villages in the world. It is part of the Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut cultural landscape, a World Heritage site since 1997.
The village has lived from salt mining for thousands of years; a funicular climbs to the salt mine above it, and the Skywalk platform looks down on the lake and village. In the small square, coloured houses and two churches stand by the water.
The village is small and crowded by day in summer, so we suggest arriving early or seeing it from a boat on the lake. It is about 1 h 15 from Salzburg.
