Discover Lombok and the Gili Islands
Lombok lies just east of Bali, about 40 minutes by domestic flight or roughly two hours by fast boat. Most of its people are Muslim Sasak, and it is known as the island of a thousand mosques, among them the great mosque of the Islamic Center in Mataram.
Lombok is known for beaches that are quieter than Bali's: in the south, Kuta Mandalika, Tanjung Aan beach and Merese Hill; in the north-west, Medana Bay facing the Gili Islands. In the north, Mount Rinjani rises to 3,726 m, with the crater lake Segara Anak inside it.
The three Gili Islands, Trawangan, Meno and Air, lie off the north-west coast, no more than 20 minutes by boat. Cars and motorbikes are not allowed, so visitors get around by bicycle or horse cart. Snorkelling with sea turtles is the highlight, and for families we prefer quieter Gili Meno.
Lombok suits families and couples who want clear water and easy halal food. We suggest 5 to 7 nights.
