Gateway to the Sahara and its palm oases

Discover Tozeur and the Djerid
Tozeur is the oasis town of the south-west, ringed by a great palm grove watered by many springs and known for its Deglet Nour dates. Its old quarter, Ouled el Hadef, has houses and lanes of yellow brick laid in geometric patterns, in a style centuries old.
To the south stretches the Chott el Djerid, the largest salt pan of the Sahara, crossed by a straight road where mirages appear at midday. To the north-west lie the mountain oases of Chebika, Tamerza and Mides, with their waterfalls and canyons.
Near Nefta, about 30 km from Tozeur, are the dunes of Ong Jemel and the Mos Espa set where Star Wars was filmed. We arrange a four-wheel-drive tour of these sites; Tozeur suits two or three nights from October to April.
