The Djerid oases and Chott el Djerid by four-wheel drive
Two days among the mountain oases, the Ong Jemel dunes and the Chott el Djerid. Tunisia's desert at its finest.
Tozeur and the Djerid · Tunisia
The experience
On the first day a private four-wheel drive takes you towards the Algerian border to the mountain oases: Chebika, whose spring falls between rocks above the palm gardens; Tamerza, with its waterfall and old village; and Mides, with its deep canyon. You return to Tozeur by the desert road.
In the late afternoon you head for Nefta and the Ong Jemel dunes, named for a rock shaped like a camel's head, and nearby the Mos Espa set built for a Star Wars film, its buildings still standing in the sand. You watch the sunset from the dunes.
On the second day you cross the Chott el Djerid at sunrise, the largest salt pan of the Sahara, when the salt crust turns pink and white, then visit the Ouled el Hadef quarter and the Tozeur palm grove by horse-drawn carriage, tasting fresh dates in season.
We arrange the tour with a driver experienced in the desert, and it can be extended to Douz, the gateway to the great dunes, with a night in a camp.
