Discover Moscow
Moscow is the heart of Russia and its largest city, built around the Kremlin, the historic fortress that holds the tsars' cathedrals and palaces and the Armoury with its crowns and royal carriages. Beside it lie Red Square and St Basil's Cathedral, built between 1555 and 1561 with its coloured onion domes. The Kremlin and Red Square have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990.
One of Moscow's great pleasures is its metro, opened in 1935: stations such as Komsomolskaya and Novoslobodskaya have chandeliers, mosaics and stained glass. On the riverbank is the modern Zaryadye Park with its floating bridge over the Moskva, and across Red Square the historic GUM arcade with its glass roofs.
Muslim travellers have the large Cathedral Mosque, reopened in 2015, and many halal restaurants. We suggest at least three nights, with an evening river cruise past the lit walls of the Kremlin.
