Discover Kiruna and Swedish Lapland
Kiruna is Sweden's northernmost town, about 145 km inside the Arctic Circle and about an hour and a half by air from Stockholm. It grew around a vast iron ore mine and is now moving, step by step, to a new site to the east as the mine expands; its famous wooden church was moved on giant trailers in 2025.
About 17 km away is the village of Jukkasjärvi and the ICEHOTEL, rebuilt every winter from the ice of the Torne River, with rooms carved by artists from around the world. To the west, Abisko lies on Lake Torneträsk in an area of few clouds, one of the best places to see the northern lights.
In winter you can try dog sledding, snowmobiles and meeting Sámi reindeer herders; in summer the sun stays above the horizon all night from late May to about mid-July. The region includes Laponia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996 and the land of the Sámi and their reindeer.
