Discover Lofoten Islands
The Lofoten Islands are a chain of mountain islands north of the Arctic Circle, linked by bridges and tunnels, their sharp peaks seeming to rise straight from the sea. For centuries their villages lived from cod fishing, and the red fishermen's cabins on stilts above the water remain their signature.
The best-known villages are Reine and Hamnøy in the south, where the mountains are mirrored in the bays in one of Norway's most famous views. The islands also have white sand beaches and turquoise water, such as Haukland and Uttakleiv: too cold for most swimmers, but ideal for walks and photographs.
The best seasons are summer, when the sun stays above the horizon all night from late May to about mid-July, and winter for the northern lights over snow-covered peaks. We arrange flights via Bodø or the islands' airports, with a car and driver between the villages.
