Durban is the coastal city on the Indian Ocean, known for warm, subtropical weather all year, golden beaches that are excellent for swimming, and a mix of Indian and local cultures; it has one of the largest communities of Indian origin outside India.
On the seafront the Golden Mile has its promenade and beaches, and at one end uShaka Marine World, with aquariums and a water park, is a favourite with children.
In the city centre the Juma Masjid on Grey Street, built in the 19th century, is one of the largest mosques in the southern hemisphere, surrounded by spice markets and halal restaurants serving curry and bunny chow.
Durban suits two or three nights in the southern winter, May to September, when the sea stays warm, and pairs well with the reserves of KwaZulu-Natal.
