Wrocław, capital of Lower Silesia, is called the city of bridges because the Oder branches around many islands linked by more than a hundred bridges. Its Market Square is one of the largest in Europe, ringed by coloured houses and a Gothic town hall among the finest buildings in Poland.
Its oldest quarter is Ostrów Tumski, the cathedral island, where gas lamps are still lit by hand every evening. Hundreds of small bronze dwarfs are scattered around the city, and children love hunting for them. The Centennial Hall has been on the UNESCO list since 2006.
Wrocław is about three hours from Kraków by car or train and about four from Berlin, so it makes a good stop between Poland and Germany.
