Sumela Monastery in the Altındere valley
Half a day
May to October
The monastery stands in the Maçka district south of Trabzon, inside Altındere National Park, above a deep forested valley. It closed for restoration in 2015 and has reopened as a museum, reached by a path through the trees. The view of it from across the valley is one of the finest in the region.
Good to know
- About 46 km from Trabzon
- The path up is steep: wear good shoes
- Check opening hours before you go
