Kronborg, Hamlet's castle
A Renaissance castle on the Øresund, a UNESCO site and the setting of Hamlet. A fine coastal day from Copenhagen.
Helsingør · Denmark
The experience
Kronborg stands on a spit of land at the narrowest point of the Øresund, and for centuries it controlled shipping between the North Sea and the Baltic and collected its dues. Rebuilt in the 16th century in Renaissance style, it was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2000.
Inside you visit the great ballroom, one of the longest halls in northern Europe, the royal apartments and the dark casemates where the statue of Holger the Dane sleeps; legend says he will wake if Denmark is ever in danger.
The castle is known worldwide as Elsinore in Shakespeare's Hamlet, and scenes from the play are performed there in summer.
We usually pair the visit with the Louisiana museum on the way and Frederiksborg Castle, in one day by private car from Copenhagen.
