The clear ice of Lake Baikal
In February and March the surface of the world's deepest lake turns to clear glass. We take you with a guide and adapted vehicles to the islands and ice caves.
Lake Baikal · Russia
The experience
Lake Baikal in southern Siberia is the deepest lake in the world, at 1,642 m, and the oldest, at an estimated 25 million years. In the hard winter its surface freezes into a thick layer of clear ice, through which cracks and frozen bubbles show like a sheet of glass.
The journey usually starts in Irkutsk and continues to Olkhon, the lake's largest island, and from there in adapted vehicles across the ice to rocky capes, ice caves and the ice sculptures around small islands such as Ogoy.
The cold is severe and can fall below minus 20 °C, but the days are often sunny. We arrange winter clothing and boots, choose warm lodges near the lake, and send a guide who knows the ice and its routes.
It suits couples, friends and photographers, and we suggest it as three or four nights added to a Moscow journey.
