Baku's Old City

İçərişəhər is the historic heart of Baku, a small town inside walls from the 11th and 12th centuries, still lived in today. In 2000 it became the first site in Azerbaijan on UNESCO's World Heritage List.

The walk starts at the Maiden Tower, a cylindrical stone tower dating at least to the 12th century, whose roof looks over the bay and the Flame Towers. Lanes then lead to the 15th- and 16th-century Palace of the Shirvanshahs, with its hall, mosque and minaret, mausoleum and bathhouse.

On the way you pass old caravanserais, among them the Multani and the Bukhara, the 11th-century Synyg Gala minaret, and shops for carpets, copper and crafts.

We arrange the walk with an Arabic-speaking guide and end it with lunch at a halal restaurant inside the walls, or a stroll on the boulevard across from the city gate.
