Marriott Mena House, Cairo

A khedive's hunting lodge in the shadow of the Great Pyramid

Historic palace

About Marriott Mena House, Cairo

A historic hotel at the foot of the Giza plateau, its rooms and gardens facing the pyramids, minutes from the Grand Egyptian Museum.

Mena House was built in 1869 as a hunting lodge for Khedive Ismail at the foot of the Giza plateau, opened as a hotel in 1886, and is named after King Menes, who united Upper and Lower Egypt. Egypt's first swimming pool opened in its gardens in 1890, and over the years it has received kings and leaders, among them the Mena House Conference of 1977.

Today it is run as Marriott Mena House, and many of its rooms and balconies look straight at the Great Pyramid across wide gardens. Its position makes an early-morning visit to the pyramids easy, with the Grand Egyptian Museum a few minutes away by car.
