The experience
The Ba Na Hills rise west of Da Nang and were a French hill station in the 1920s. Today one of the longest cable cars in the world carries you over forest and waterfalls to a mountain resort with a French-style village, gardens and rides for children.
Its best-known sight is the Golden Bridge (Cau Vang), a 150-metre walkway opened in 2018 and held up by two giant stone hands that seem to reach out of the mountain. When cloud drifts beneath it, it appears to hang in the sky.
Leave early, before the tour groups: crowds build after 10 a.m. and at holidays. The summit is several degrees cooler than the coast, so bring a light jacket.
The outing takes a full or most of a day, with a private car from Da Nang (about 45 minutes to the cable car station) and entry tickets that include the cable car.
