Jungfraujoch, the Top of Europe
A train and gondola journey to Europe's highest railway station, 3,454 metres up. Snow all year and a view over the longest glacier in the Alps.
Interlaken · Switzerland
The experience
You leave Interlaken Ost for Grindelwald, where the Eiger Express gondola lifts you in 15 minutes to Eigergletscher, then the Jungfrau Railway runs through a tunnel inside the mountain to Jungfraujoch. The whole journey takes about 1 h 30.
At 3,454 metres you stand in Europe's highest railway station. From the Sphinx Observatory terrace you look over the Aletsch Glacier, the longest in the Alps and part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch World Heritage site.
At the top are the Ice Palace with its carved tunnels, a snow area where children play in summer and winter, restaurants and a Swiss chocolate shop.
The air is thin at this height, so move slowly and drink water. We pick a clear day by the forecast, and suggest returning via Lauterbrunnen and Wengen to see the valley from the other side.
