The Salalah khareef
Green mountains, mist and waterfalls in the middle of the Arabian summer.
Salalah and Dhofar · Oman
The experience
From June to September, monsoon winds from the Indian Ocean carry mist and drizzle onto the Dhofar mountains, the slopes turn green, and temperatures stay in the twenties. This is the khareef, the season that draws Gulf families every summer.
We take you to Wadi Darbat with its waterfalls, lake and camels grazing on the banks, to the springs of Ain Razat, Ain Hamran and Ain Jarziz, then to Mughsail beach and its blowholes and the winding mountain road towards the Yemeni border.
The Khareef Dhofar festival runs through the season with family events and markets. In town, buy Dhofari frankincense and incense at Al Haffa Souq.
Book early, as hotels and flights fill in July and August, and travel with a four-wheel drive and driver, as mountain roads are slippery in the mist.
