The ancient city of Butrint
A city of more than 2,500 years among woods on a lagoon near Sarandë. A morning tour with a guide past its Greek theatre and Roman baths.
Sarandë and Ksamil · Albania
The experience
Butrint is one of the most important ancient sites in the Mediterranean. Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Venetians lived there in turn, each era leaving its traces above the last. UNESCO listed it in 1992, and it lies today in a national park of woods and wetlands.
The path passes the small Greek theatre cut into the hillside, the sanctuary of Asclepius, the Roman baths, the Byzantine baptistery with its mosaic floor, the Great Basilica, the city walls and the Lion Gate, up to the Venetian castle with its museum and view over the Vivari channel.
We arrange the visit in the morning before the heat, with a guide who tells the story at a family pace, and follow it with lunch in Ksamil or by the lagoon. It is about 30 minutes from Sarandë.
The path is mostly shaded but stony and uneven in places, so wear comfortable shoes and take water.
