Bryggen
Bryggen is a row of painted wooden buildings on the east side of Bergen's harbour, once home to the Hanseatic merchants who controlled the stockfish trade for centuries. Rebuilt after fires in the same traditional way, it was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1979.
Behind the façades, narrow wooden passages now hold craft workshops and small shops, and the Bryggen Museum and the Hanseatic Museum tell the story of the place.
