Meknes and Volubilis
Full day from Fes
March to May and September to November
Meknes, the 17th-century capital of Sultan Moulay Ismail, has been on the UNESCO list since 1996; its best-known sights are Bab Mansour and El Hedim square. About 30 km away lies Roman Volubilis (UNESCO 1997), with its arch, columns and mosaic floors, and the town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun on the facing hill. Meknes is about an hour from Fes.
Good to know
- Volubilis has no shade: bring a hat and water
- A licensed guide explains the mosaics
- It can be combined with a transfer between Fes and Rabat
