The Montenvers train and the Mer de Glace
Half a day
All year except the November to early December closure
The Montenvers train climbs from Chamonix to 1,913 metres in 20 minutes, above the Mer de Glace, the largest glacier in France. From the station a small gondola takes you down to the ice cave at 1,760 metres, and the Glaciorium explains glaciers and how the climate is changing them. A family outing of half a day.
Good to know
- A long metal staircase leads to the ice cave
- The train closes from early November to early December
