Harar, the city of mosques
2 days
October to March
Harar is one of the oldest Islamic centres in the Horn of Africa, known as the city of mosques and saints. UNESCO inscribed its walled old town, Jugol, as a World Heritage Site in 2006; it holds 82 mosques, many shrines and colourful Harari houses. It is reached by air to Dire Dawa, then about an hour by road, and we check travel advice before arranging it.
Good to know
- Access via Dire Dawa airport
- Modest dress in the old town
