Historic Cairo, from Al-Azhar to Khan el-Khalili
Half a day to a full day
October to April; late afternoon in summer
You start at Al-Azhar Mosque, founded in 970, then walk along Al-Muizz Street past the Qalawun complex, Beshtak Palace and the Sabil of Abd al-Rahman Katkhuda to Bab al-Futuh. The day ends in Khan el-Khalili among brass lanterns, perfumes and silver, with tea or coffee in one of its old cafés.
The walk can begin at Salah al-Din's Citadel, the Mosque of Muhammad Ali and the Mosque of Sultan Hassan, or be arranged on a Friday so that you pray in one of these mosques.
Good to know
- Modest dress to enter the mosques
- Al-Muizz Street is pedestrian for most of the day
- Prices in Khan el-Khalili are open to bargaining
