Frederiksborg Castle, Hillerød
2 to 3 hours
All year; the gardens are best in summer
King Christian IV built Frederiksborg in the early 17th century on three small islands in the lake at Hillerød, north of Copenhagen. Today it houses the Danish Museum of National History, with richly decorated halls and royal portraits, and terraced baroque gardens stretch behind it. It pairs well with Kronborg and Louisiana in one day.
Good to know
- About 40 minutes by car from Copenhagen
- A small boat crosses the lake in summer
